Sequencing Project- Ys V: Kefin, The Lost City of Sand

Postby Willow » Fri Sep 23, 2011 4:26 am

...or Ys V, for short. The goal of this project is to show Ys V some love and attention here at the Video Game Music Archive. Interested sequencers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the soundtrack (or at least skip through until you find one that strikes your fancy!), which can be found HERE, and then make a post below announcing your interest in any particular tracks. You can participate without claiming tracks, though it'll be a bit awkward if 4 people all upload versions of the same piece... Speaking which, it'll be great if you can hold off uploading your sequences until December 18th- this will give the project more attention in the new-files!

Here is a list of the tracks from Ys V, color coordinated to indicate which tracks have and have not been claimed, etc.:

So far I've heard expressed interest from Jayster, strugglepoo, & mudlord. I've spoken with Mr. Ys himself, Justus Johnston, and he said that he may make a contribution at some point! I will continue to try to raise awareness about the project and I would much like it if others would do the same. Let me know if you have any questions.

EDIT: Please either PM me or post here once you've completed any tracks for this project so that I can keep the list up to date! :D

Peace,

It'd be nice if you explained how to proceed, especially for those of us who aren't familiar with SPC format. That's the only thing keeping me from participating right now.

Are you unsure of how to listen to SPCs or how to sequence MIDIs while using SPCs as a basis or...something else?

There is a list of applications & plugins HERE that can facilitate SPC playback (I recommend using Winamp with the SNESAmp plugin for Windows; Game Music Box for OS X). The SPC format supports a maximum of 8 monophonic tracks that are generally speaking easy to separate from one another- much like a MIDI sequencer can mute or solo specific channels, you can do the same with most SPCs. If you load a SPC through SNESAmp in Winamp, you can press Alt+3 ('view file info' if you right click on the SPC in the playlist), then click on the Extended tab, you should be able to mute individual tracks. IIRC, this will not work if you've opened the SPC through an expanded RSN- if this becomes a problem for you, you rename the file from *.rsn to *.rar, you can manually extract the SPC files, then attempt to mute individual channels. You can record the tracks in various ways, if necessary, including using the disk writer plugin in Winamp, which can be selected & configured from the Output section. Or all of that being said, you could always do it the old fashioned way and just do it unassisted by ear. The SNESAmp plugin also gives you the ability to change the tempo of the SPC playback, etc., which can be helpful sometimes. It's worth experimenting with if you're unfamiliar with the plugin.

...was that what you wanted to know?

I have great affection for nearly the entire soundtrack, and therefore have no truly specific preferences. I selected two of the more lighthearted pieces for myself; however, if someone else had their heart set on sequencing either of them, I will gladly free them up:

[5] Peace in the Street
[8] Shopping

The purpose of the project is to maximize the number and quality of MIDIs for the Ys V section of the VGMusic Archive, so preferably General MIDI or one of its very close cousins.

I'll tackle Lost Kingdom (both), Forest Village, and Night Sight. I dunno about any more; I'll see about it when I'm close to done with the former.

(Also, is it just me, or does Thieves of Brotherhood sound like it should be in a Capcom or SNK game? Haha.)

Wow, this is some pretty damned good stuff. It was difficult to pare myself down to just a few, but I'd love to do Charged Trial, Sand Castle and The Undercurrent (mind you, I might be fooling myself as to how much time I have to do all this haha)
