Sample Pack Contest VII: ALBUM RELEASED!

Postby LukeB » Sat Mar 31, 2012 2:11 pm

The results are in !

I hope you enjoyed the contest, I certainly did. I think you all did a fantastic job at making the tracks and giving feedback !

As you all know, every SPC album needs a nice cover to go with it.
So my question is, do you want to help the people who participated in the contest by making a album cover ?

Does that come with commentary? ^_^

Also, I'm shocked to not see Blitz Lunar entering a song...
My game music works:
Scribble Star by Winzenheimer and the Stencyl Team
Nine Pixel Game by KungFuFurby (my own creation! ^_^)
Arkanaut by Manuel/Satelite Play
Blackheist by Manuel/Satelite Play

And some others that haven't been released yet.

And the top 3 just happens to be my personal top 3. Nice!
Congrats everyone.

And yes, where are the comments?

me too :( though I said for a while that I wasn't entering. too bad about Kroc, Kris Troutman, MaliceX and some others too. we all dun goofed this time. no more perfect attendance records for SPC!

right now I'm hurrying to get the song titles and artists properly named, titled, tagged and formatted. this is what i have so far. if your title or artist name is incorrect now is the time to speak up (for instance, "SPC7" and "samplepackcontest7" give me some concern - are there actual titles for these?)

I named my song SPC7 because I couldn't think of anything better. Okay I admit it's lame but originally it was really supposed to be the name of the song.

My SPC 5 tunes were rather badly named to some extent. All of them had SPC 5 as a suffix (which was removed), one of them gave myself away. I kept the suffixes for the source IT files, but I renamed them starting at SPC 6 prior to submission.

I can safely say this was my best SPC so far, as Stranded Outside in a Preposterous Enviroment is my best tune.

You certainly had me fooled with that one! I had suspected Pongball at first. Real good job on that entry.

Congratulations all, and to blue.nocturne for taking the gold once again. Dreaming Panflute was indeed very nice. Wonder why I didn't attribute Yulia to dusthillguy, some of the melody is reminiscent of your style. Loved the song in any case.

Yeah, my score is pretty bad but that was to be expected so it's not surprising.
I really didn't have inspiration : too much samples !

However, I feel the global level was higher than SPC6, there was definitely more good music and less lame/crappy songs in this SPC (not thanks to me but heh).

I am happy that both of my favourite songs make the top 2 !! And blue nocturne wins the 1st place for the 2nd time (or is it more times ? I haven't been around for more than 1 year).
I really think blue nocturne is the king of sequencing. Which of course doesn't mean the others aren't great as well !

My other favourite song from the contest scored quite low, I think that's because this song almost made me cry but technically it's nothing but chords and is very simple so other people didn't have it score very high.

Yeah, I was shocked to see that, too. His songs have always been one of my favs from the SPC's, especially stuff like Dream Gashapon, very nicely mixed stuff.

Anyway, I loved your entries, Furby, especially 'People's Inner Passions Aroused'. Man, I should stop rushing my songs, I know that I have far more potential, but sometimes I'm lazy ass hell *lmao* ^-^

Anyway, as always, I'm surprised how people actually created something beautiful using trashy samples. Dreaming Panflute is simply amazing, and I also enjoyed Miss Fortune a lot, just like all the other stuff.

I'm still looking for a nick that sounds better than 'EnergeticEssence', so I'll just go under my real name (Felix Lukas). I'm not sure, why it changed the title, but the ' 2953541330893006' is actually called 'Trippin' on Laughing Gas' *lol* ^^

yeah not bad turnout for entries this time overall. good quality stuff overall! got some new songs to add to my big favourites media library :)

are we going to do sample sources? yes, yes we're going to do sample sources!

moonside.wav -- everyone knows this is from Earthbound. you might not know (actually you probably do) that it comes from this Ric Ocasek song originally, which is where i sampled it from for higher quality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYrM4qTsqns
doctorderek.wav -- blind autistic pianist Derek Paravicini calling out "Doctor WHOOO" before he starts playing this latin improv of the doctor who theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpIigV7-kJk#t=12m20s
rickwakeman.wav -- an infamous Roland D-50 patch called the "Living Calliope" that was everywhere during the 90s. glad to see it was used so much in the entries! it's a lovely sound. I didn't know its specific name or origin when i submitted it, so I just called it that based on this video :): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDsvZGM1vD8

what about yours?

EnergeticEssence: noted, thanks.

I was talking about uncertainity (which I also noted 100).

Now in answer to the comments I got :
first of all, yes, the song was way too quiet and I don't know why it ended up like that. I had already submitted it when I figured out the problem and I didn't want to submit an updated version.

@zenkusa; @blue.nocture : you are perfectly right, my song feels unfinished (in fact it is unfinished). I just made a crappy ending at the last minute because I couldn't continue the song ! Then I said I'd have liked to do a second entry, using all the ideas I had but that wouldn't fit in the first song (instead of doing a lame transition to something completely different) but I ran out of time and inspiration.
@xenu : yes I spent a lot of time making the organ sound good and I'm proud of it. HOWEVER I made two speeds (slow and fast) like the real organs but only used fast in my song so I didn't even show off all I wanted to
@Charbydiz : No I wasn't trying to imit anyone, it's just those samples inspired me ! And thanks for pointing me where they're from because it was a mystery for me. I played Mega Man ZX but only the first 3 or 4 missions of it, after this it became too hard so I haven't heard this song.
This sample inspired me but it had obviously very strong MP3-artefacts (even though it came in wav format you could tell it had been converted to a very low bitrate before). This bugged me a bit, but eventually I decided to still use them.

Finally, my sample sources :
telep.wav : A sound effect from Final Fantasy IV when you take the serpent road between Mystidia and Baron. (I was disappointed it was almost unused in the spc set)
pokemon.wav : A sound effect when you heal your pokemons in the GBA games (note : i don't play Pokemon games, but this is my favourite sound effect ever)
sync.wav : This is from an instrument on my synth that is called "sync wave".
