Folks, it's actually not even too hard to write a boss theme. You all know those boss battles that you loved back in the old SNES times. Just listen to some Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger or something like that boss theme, and let that inspire you :)

I've finished writing my entry a few days ago, I'll send it to you. =]

However, I must say I'm not familiar with the SNES era, so I had to do some research. x]
I paid attention to the technical limitations of the SNES, but I'm not sure we had too.
At least it was fun to write!

Ah, you don't have to pay attention to the technical limitations of the SNES :)

You just have to write a boss theme in the style of music from a SNES game. So just something that sounds like music from Secret of Mana or Kirby or whatever :)

I have one entry that's just about finished. And there will probably be more when I'm done with that one.

This theme is hard, but it's a good way to learn things that are way out of your league. :D

Hmm...doesn't look like I can do this like I thought..., sorry! I MIGHT be able to but I highly doubt I will be able to make anything decent in time since I'm going to be busy with a bunch of stuff.

Hopefully there's a Monthly MIDI Contest type thing next month though and I can just join that one instead! Unfortunately I really liked the theme of this month a lot and had some good ideas in my head for it.

You could just make it anyway and post it in it's own thread. It would be a shame to deny the world good music.

Except that I can honestly not think of an SNES game that had memorable boss music. Keep in mind though, both the games you've mentioned I never played.

The best I was coming up with was Yoshi's Island boss themes, but I couldn't come up with anything that wasn't plagiarism. :p

I'm not really in favor of extending the deadline. I don't think it will yield us much more entries. If we pick an easier and less restrictive theme next month, more people will enter.

That, and I want to try my hands on another theme next month. I don't want to wait another two weeks for that. :P

You could also make up a boss theme. You could even choose a game that doesn't have any boss themes, and make something up. Imagine a boss fight in F-Zero or something like that. I did the same thing too, except I didn't choose F-Zero as a game. My other suggestion would be choosing a game like Kirby. Writing a boss theme in the style of music from a Kirby game seems good to me.

Keep in mind, ReversalMushroom, I had a Sega Genesis as a child, not an SNES. All the SNES games I've played have been fairly recent. I haven't played many of the more obscure ones.

Axelay - What's That?

Never heard of it.

Donkey Kong Country - Gang-Plank Galleon
Donkey Kong Country 2 - Boss Bossanova
Donkey Kong Country 2 - Crocodile Cacophony
Donkey Kong Country 3 - Big Boss Blues

I considered this one, Gang Plank Galleon being the one I had in mind, but I didn't feel like doing a sea shanty-esque song.

Emerald Dragon - Field Battle

Never played it.

Final Fantasy V - Gilgamesh

I've played a few Final Fantasy games, but not V.

Gradius III - Boss 2

Never played Gradius

Mega Man 7 - The Eight Robot Masters
Mega Man 7 - Wily's Secret Weapon
Mega Man X - Boss Battle
Mega Man X - Sigma Battle
Mega Man X2 - Mortal Combat
Mega Man X2 - Grim Vigilante
Mega Man X3 - Doppler Battle

One of my favorite series! Does n't mean any of the Megaman boss themes ever stuck out to me. In my opinion they were a little weak and shallow composition wise compared to the stage tunes. For example. Grim Vigilante is a ten second loop. Sigma's first form theme from X3 is also a short uninteresting loop. Second form is pretty bad too. I can remember all the stage tunes of EVERY megaman vividly, but few of the boss themes stick with me, for good reason. The only one that comes to me right now is Trap Phantasm from Megaman ZXA, which was an awesome song. But not SNES. :/

Plok! - Boss

Nope, never played it. Listening to it though, it's pretty neat. Reminds me a lot of Kris Troutman, actually.

R-Type III - Boss Battle 1
R-Type III - Boss Battle 3

Been meaning to play this one. I'm familiar with the game, but I haven't played it. Along similar lines, though, Raiden Trad. Another awesome shmup. Thought of doing one based on that, but I'm much more familiar with the Genesis FM music, which was sounded quite different, so I felt that any of the songs I would have done would have been based on that. Not really in the spirit of the contest.

Super Bomberman - Boss
Super Bomberman 2 - Dastardly Bomber's Machine
Super Bomberman 3 - Boss 1
Super Bomberman 3 - Boss 2
Super Bomberman 4 - Final Boss
Super Bomberman 5 - Fight with Bad Bomber
Super Bomberman 5 - Master of Time

I've played Bomberman a lot, and am quite a fan of the way the whole game works, but I never played enough singleplayer to get a hold on the boss themes. Probably because singleplayer was dull and repetitive for most of them.

Super Earth Defense Force - Boss Attack

Never played this. Listening to the song though, it's pretty cool.

Super Godzilla - Bagan Battle

Ew.

Super Mario RPG - Fight Against Bowser
Super Mario RPG - Fight Against a Stronger Monster
Super Mario RPG - Fight Against an Armed Boss
Super Mario RPG - Fight Against Culex
Super Mario RPG - Fight Against Smithy
Super Mario RPG - Fight Against Smithy, Who Likes Transforming

Here you've got a bunch of keepers. Of course I considered this game, but I had no real inspiration for anything along these lines.

Super R-Type - Return of the Creature

See above.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - Anger of the Guardians
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - The Prince of Darkness

Oh, the memories. Regardless, you seem to be ignoring that Anger of the Guardians is quite a shoddy song. Just a few chords that loop over and over again. It sounds like one of the many unfinished songs in my song folder. Prince of Darkness is a nice song though.

Yoshi's Island - Mini-Boss
Yoshi's Island - Bowser

And these are the ones I mentioned. They've got a unique and very memorable style to them, especially the former. But like I said, I wasn't having any luck with these.

...Are you really insulting me over this by calling me a "casual gamer"? That's... heh, ridiculous. I could probably name a few great non-mainstream games that you haven't played, and "insult" you over it too. But I won't. Do you know why? Because I don't feel like being an idiot.

C'mon guys, stop arguing. The contest is supposed to be fun.

@Charybdizs
If you don't have any ideas, then just wait for the next contest. I know, a boss theme isn't the easiest thing (neither for me).
