Twelve Years of Video Game Music

Postby Yaginuma » Fri Dec 19, 2008 10:57 am

The Video Game Music Archive is now 12 years old! This past year, approximately 3,000 songs have been added to the archive, bringing the total song count over 27,000. Thanks to the community of sequencers and dedicated VGMusic staff members for helping to keep the site going. This coming year, we plan to finally put in a new site design. Our current design is apparently over 9 years old. More news on this initiative will be forthcoming.

Happy (somewhat belated) birthday, VGMusic. Whatever the redesign is, I'm sure it'll be great. :)

I've emailed a few times over the last few months with no replies about a partnership/integration between OC ReMix & VGMusic, whatever form that might take, but it seems like that's not something you'd be interested in. At any rate, I think OCR can at least get more exposure for artists here by mirroring MIDIs, and best of luck with your plans for 2009 - let me know what we can do to help.

This is the one site that hasn't changed since I first started visiting back in 98', and that is impressive. Usually sites go through several designs every few years. It will be weird to see a new design on a site that has gone unchanged in so many years. Going through and looking for MIDIs remind me of how the Internet use to be ten years ago.

It certainly does leave an impression, yes. :(

The real problem will be making a design that'll live up to all the other sites around these days, both aesthetically and functionally, but also something that people will like and seems relevant to the site. I'm trying to make some mock-up designs in Photoshop, though I don't think my design chops are up to the task.

Aww! keep a classic skin option at least. Though this is my first post, Ive been trolling this site since I was in middle school in 2000. I actually stumble on this site looking for the Deja Vu song on the NES, and kept coming back for many various reasons. Regardless, I'm really glad this site isn't one that is dying.

Although I am harder to reach, many others frequent the chat rooms on esper.net. See:

Thank you for a dozen years of delightful service!

While I am looking forward to seeing this site's new face, I really hope that it retains its characteristic simplicity.

Having been frequenting VGMusic since the late 90's (only just became a member - :o ) while so many other sites have become a mind-blowing bombardment of over-information, it has always been a refreshing break to visit here and get straight to the chunes without having to wade through 20 layers of complex, animated, cluttered screens. I bet I'm not alone thinking this...

Anyway merci encore - and here's to another 12 years of midi bliss!

Ease-of-use is always a top priority (number of clicks to get to what you need). Some of the alphabet split ups we currently have are due to old computers/web browsers were not able to handle loading A-Z.

I also hate Java, Flash, blinking stuff, and forced noise.

I'd like to see the front page emphasize the music collection more so its quicker/easier to find. We're still hashing out details.

We have always put a lot of emphasis on making sure links work. At the moment, we are going through an removing or relabeling old crud. The VGMusic Store is now gone (obsolete) and well as the Whiteboard we had (an obsolete java applet). Lots more cleanup underway.
