Cockin' Denis - Cockin' Johnny masters
For those of you who weren't around for the last one, the Sample Pack Contest is a musical composition contest which lasts about a month. Everyone who enters the contest submits three samples. Everyone has about a week to submit their samples, and once this week is over, all the samples that were submitted are gathered together and released in a zip file - this is the sample pack. I will put a link to the samplepack in this post, and then announce that the contest has started.

Once the samplepack is available, you can begin composing using the sounds from the pack. You will have about a month to write your compositions, and then you must submit all your compositions before the deadline. I will put instructions on how to submit your compositions in this post.

Once all the songs have been received, I will put a link to a zip file containing all the songs in this thread. I will also post each individual song in a thread at iiichan.net/boards/music so you will have two different sources to obtain the songs from, in case one source becomes inaccessible.

Once all the songs have been made available, you will have about 10 days to listen to all the compositions, and then cast your votes. I will make available a voting form and instructions on how to submit your votes.

It's unlikely, but if it seems that a significant number of contestants need some extra time to finish and submit their works, I may extend the length of the competition by a few days, or a week maximum, to give them a chance.

Dates and deadlines
Wed 4th march - samples begin to be accepted, people are able to come and sign themselves on for the compo
Monday 8th March - deadline for submission of samples. After this date, the samplepack is released and the contest begins. No more samples will be accepted, but people can still come and sign themselves up if they'd still like to write a song. When you've finished a song, you can submit it whenever you want, and you can submit as many songs as you like.
15th of April - After this date, the contest is closed and no more submissions are accepted. The songpack is released, and everyone listens to all the songs, and rates the songs on a scale of 1 to 10. You can also leave comments on individual songs if you desire.
25th of April - After this date, ratings are no longer accepted and the rankings are announced.

Contest rules
Make a song using the samples from the sample pack. You may edit the samples and use effects as you see fit, although there is one exception: "Shortlooping/"Chipping" the samples (to get simple wave instruments) is disallowed. That is, looping extremely short sections of samples in order to get chiptune-like sounds. The reason for this is you can apply this modification to any sample and get much the same effect - you end up just making chiptunes, and the challenge aspect of the contest is lost.
Using samples that did not come from the sample pack is strictly forbidden, and any songs which do this will be disqualified from the contest.
Songs must be original compositions - covers will not be accepted (although if you cover only a small part of a song and incorporate it into an otherwise original composition, perhaps as humor or popular culture reference, that is acceptable).
Your compositions must be no shorter than one (1) minute.
If you submit samples, you're expected to also submit a composition.

If your name is in green and bold, I have received and counted your votes.

Great, Blitz Lunar. I'll add you to the sign up list.
So, I'm thinking about the rules regarding samples:

* Each contestant can submit up to three (3) samples
* Samples can be voice recordings, musical instruments, noises of any kind - anything.
* Maximum length 5 seconds. You may not submit a sample longer than this
* You are not allowed to cheat by fitting two (or more) entirely different things into the same file and claiming it to be one sample, therefore submitting more than three samples. Now, I can understand if they're two different things which are closely related (for example, two different drum samples arranged as part of a drumloop, or two different words spoken by the same voice as part of a sentence) but if I can tell that you're trying to game the system by fitting two different things into the same file, I'll be angry.

What do you think?

Great, RAMPKORV, I'll also add you to the list.

Thanks Blitz Lunar, contacting these people would be great. A mass email would also be a good idea - it would be great to see the old contestants back again, and new contestants as well.
So far, we have four contestants, including me, all who were in the last contest.

What do you all think about the deadlines I set? Although they were rough drafts when I came up with them, they seem quite sensible to me. Following these rules would give us a total competition time of a month and a half... not a bad length of time if you ask me. Time JOHNNY.
