Best Year for Gaming

Postby King Meteor » Sun Mar 04, 2012 10:12 pm

In terms of the games released that year, what do you think was the best year for gaming? And list some notable games released that year.

For me, I'd probably have to pick 2001:
Paper Mario
Final Fantasy X
Sonic Adventure 2
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Metal Gear Solid 2
...just to name a few
I know the world's not going to end in 2012 because Marty McFly travelled to 2015

Hmm... picking just one year is hard, but I'll do it anyway.

1999:
Chrono Cross
Counter-Strike
Donkey Kong 64
Everquest
Final Fantasy VIII
Silent Hill
Sonic Adventure
Spyro (2): Ripto's Rage / Gateway to Glimmer
System Shock 2
Team Fortress Classic
Unreal Tournament

Note, these aren't necessarily games I like, but notable games released in 1999.

Well, I was kind of thinking the best year in terms of games you like. I agree, it is really hard to pick just one.

I also thought of 1996:
Super Mario RPG
Donkey Kong Country 3
Mega Man X3
Super Mario 64
Mario Kart 64

and 1997:
Star Fox 64
Diddy Kong Racing
Final Fantasy VII
Mega Man X4
Mega Man 8

Can't argue with 2001.

The last couple of years were pretty damn good. Pokemon Black and White revamped the pokemon series (and we're to expect direct sequels to Black and White as well as opposed to a typical followup like Yellow or Crystal), DKC Returns was great and Sonic Colors was well done despite not having as impressive a story as I would have liked.

I don't think Sonic's well-known for their stories at this point. :p

The only real problem the series has is overreacting fanboys.

In all seriousness, I'd have to go with 1985, because of the North American release of the Famicom along with Super Mario Bros, 10-Yard Fight, Baseball, Clu Clu Land, Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Golf, Gyromite, Hogan’s Alley, Ice Climber, Kung Fu, Pinball, Stack-Up, Tennis, Wild Gunman, Wrecking Crew, and Soccer which thoroughly and decisively ended the crash of the North American video game market. Now you can't just take into account that Super Mario Bros is a really good game when you contemplate it or 1985, you also have to factor in what it and the NES did for gaming and how together they resurrected an industry. Can you imagine what life would be like today if there were no video games? It would be horrific. We might have been normal.

You just listed 2, maybe 3, quality games in there.
