Need a music making program with no admin install

Postby xXMorbidDecayXx » Thu Jan 19, 2012 7:47 pm

Can anyone help? Many thanks to whoever can send me a link for a MIDI music making program that doesn't need administrator installation and is also free. And I won't accept any "Sorry, I can't find any" or something like that.
Thanks in advance to whoever helps me out.

I'd suggest good old Cakewalk (old versions of the program, because newer versions suck).

I cannot think of any MIDI program that does not require admin install. They usually need to access the "Program Files" folder, which requires admin privileges to modify.

Which version of WIndows are you using? There were some old MIDI programs that do not use the "Program Files" folder, but given that you're looking for a "no admin install", you're probably using Win 7 or Win XP. The MIDI programs will usually not work due to compatility.

I use a Windows Vista.
Is there any thing you could find that is compatible with that? :)
I'd also like to know what old MIDI programs you were talking about.

I see two problems.

#1: It requires admin access since this program installs in the Program FIles folder.
#2: Since the person is using Win Vista, I don't know if it bring up compatability issues.

Apparently for you MorbidDecay, I was unable to find something that might work for your system. The non-admin requirement is pretty hard to workaround.

There is one solution. One of us could compress the contents of a program into a rar file, and then email that to him, thus skipping "installation" altogether.

Huh ?
I think it doesn't touch Program Files and by defaults install to C:\CWP30
Remember, this was designed for Windows 3.x which didn't have yet a program files folder (I think).

Hmm... That's true, but given that it's for Windows 3.x, there's a good chance that his Vista OS will block it. My Win 7 machine will not run Win 95 and older software. Win 7 tells me that the program is outdated when I try to run programs for Win 95 and eariler. Since mine is a 64-bit OS, the 32-bit version might have a better chance of success.

Win 98 used Program Files filer.

He only wants an older program because he thinks it won't access Program Files and thus won't require administrative privileges. But PROGRAMS CAN BE RUN FROM ANYWHERE IN THE COMPUTER. I've compressed the contents of Anvil Studio's post-installation Program Files folder into a ZIP file:

http://www.4shared.com/get/zgxy_mS_/Anv ... _2011.html

(You'll also want this: http://www.4shared.com/get/G19gY1xm/Win ... ional.html)

All you have to do is open it, drag the "Anvil Studio 2011" folder into your desktop (or wherever), and you can run it from that location, thus skipping installation and Program Files altogether. See, AI The Original and Bregalad? THIS IS HOW YOU SOLVE A FREAKIN' PROBLEM! :D

PS - If you don't mind my asking, why is the whole administrator thing a problem for you? Are you using someone else's computer to do this?

Oh hey, thank you too, reversalmushroom. And I'm using my mom's old computer, she won't give me the admin password even though she doesn't use this computer anymore (She has a newer one). Pretty stupid if you ask me. :)

Cakewalk 3 was designed for Windows 3 but it still works perfectly under Windows 7 without even using compatibility mode. The only bug I have is that the icon on the status bar is the one of the last program you closed instead of cakewalk icon which is weird, but the program itself is fully functional.

Yeah! It does, actually! Thanks for helping out! :)

I'm happy to hear it! And if you'd rather try a different program, just let me know.

PS - Which one do you like best? Anvil Studio, Cakewalk, or Winjammer?
