Monthly MIDI Contest #8 - April 2012

I have been wondering what has happened to the Monthly MIDI Contests. I've never participated in one of them, but I like the idea and a lot of the entries from the past Monthly MIDI Contests, so I thought I'd run one myself.

The rules are:
Make (a) MIDI file(s) according to the challenge/theme of the contest. The challenge/theme changes each month.
You may make more than one file if you wish.
Send your songs in by the deadline. Then, if you wish, you can rate the songs (except your own). A voting form will be made available at the same time as the songs. Rate each song on a scale from 0 to 10 (used to be from 0 to 100, but I thought it would be easier if you rank from 0 to 10).
You are to make original compositions only.
Your songs must be no shorter than one minute (unless the challenge/theme says otherwise).
The authors of the songs must be kept secret until the scores have been announced.

Please don't use Quicktime to listen to the MIDI files (unless you have no choice), because it's extremely buggy and many songs mess up horribly in it. Some instruments play completely out of tune.

This month, the challenge/theme is:
You must write a song in the style of music from a SNES game. It has to be a boss battle theme. Listen to on of your favorite boss themes from SNES games, to get an impression of what your song could be like. The title of your song should fit the theme. If you want to, you can include, what game you've chosen. You don't have to though. There is also going to be a scoresheet, where you can rank the tracks and comment them. If you want to, you can also guess, what game the music has been copied from.

Dates and submission times
The contest starts April 9th.
The deadline for submission is April 30th (may be extended, if necessary).
Release date of the songs: To be announced
Release date of the voting results: To be announced

How to submit your songs
* Email (or if you can't email, PM) your MIDI file(s) to felixlukas@hotmail.com. The subject must be your username's MIDI songs.

How to vote/rate
* Once the songs are made available, a voting form (text document) will be attached to the main post in the thread.
* Download and fill in the form, and email it to felixlukas@hotmail.com. The subject must be your username's MIDI votes. If you can't use email, you can PM your votes to me.

Contest participants Let me know if you want your name added or removed

Me (EnergeticEssence) (1 entry)
Xenu (1 entry)
AnthonyMorgan (1 entry)
Kayin (1 entry)
Colaresmusic (1 entry)
Zenkusa (1 entry)
Dentelle (1 entry)

To all the MIDI pros and people who have participated in past Monthly MIDI Contests:
Please let me know if I forgot anything or if I should add more things to the contest.

Well, what else do I have to say? I hope the contest is going to be a lot of fun for everyone who participates :)

News

If you want to, you may also write your track using real SNES samples/instruments (plus your MIDI file!), and then send me both files (MIDI + MP3).

Deadline: Contest is over!

Thanks for hosting this. Count me in too.

I'm not sure I understand the theme though; what do you mean by "in the style of music from a SNES game"?

Usually the first thing we do is openly discuss what the theme will be; but I guess it's ok if the host decides alone too.

I mean that you have to copy the music of a SNES game, and it should be a boss theme. For example: If you choose Kirby's Dream Land 3, then you have to write boss music that sounds like music from KDL3. Listen to BlitzLunar's "Ulterior Boss Battle" to get an impression of what I'm talking about:

Alright, thanks for telling me that. I'll keep that in mind in case I'll host future MMC's.

Boss themes? Confound you sir! You couldn't have chosen a harder theme for me. Ah well, at very least it will be a learning experience for me. That is, if I choose to participate. Currently I have no ideas.

Yeah, I know that writing boss themes isn't the easiest thing. I'd suggest to download some of your favorite SNES game OST's from Zophar.com, and listen to some boss themes to get an idea of how a boss theme could be like.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I really don't think that's a good idea. The purpose of a MIDI contest is to get the most out of just the General MIDI patches. If people are allowed to use SNES samples/instruments, you're basically adding thousands of instruments, and it becomes more of an allgear contest instead of just a MIDI contest.

Although, it's not a bad idea to release those songs in MP3 format after the results are announced, while we judge the songs on how the MIDI sounds. That way, if people are going to use snes samples, they'll at least have to make a MIDI file that sounds decent.

Yeah, you're right. I didn't mean, that people are to only submit their MP3 files. Of course, only MIDI is allowed in the MIDI contest, but it would be interesting to hear the MP3 files using real SNES samples after the contest. It's not part of the contest, but it would be interesting to hear the MIDI in comparison to the track using real SNES samples.

I'm out. My ability to produce and listen to MIDI files are not very good on my computer... Schism Tracker has failed me in this essence. Harmony Assistant is OK, but personally, I would prefer not to make a return appearance...

Slight possibility that I may end up entering one...
My game music works:
Scribble Star by Winzenheimer and the Stencyl Team
Nine Pixel Game by KungFuFurby (my own creation! ^_^)
Arkanaut by Manuel/Satelite Play
Blackheist by Manuel/Satelite Play

And some others that haven't been released yet.

Ahh, what a bummer!

I like your music, would be cool to hear something from you =)

Edit:

Wow, my first entry is actually done.
